I live on Christmas Island. It’s Turtle Christmas Light Shirt on Greta beach, it’s very remote and difficult to clear rubbish out- locals do it each time they visit- but it’s overwhelming.. it is replaced instantly. Comes mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia but it’s everywhere. The last audit was a scientist who worked out 11 different countries. There was a clean up yesterday by some local girls truck 4wd needed and ropes and pulleys to lift it 30m up a cliff then a 500m walk to the trucks. In countries like Indonesia, Thailand etc. The waste management is a really big problem and it doesn’t actually help that western ppl travel there for their holidays and consume around 50 plastic bottles of water per their stay. The waste is either burnt on local ppl’s back yards or thrown in to the ocean. The biggest problem of course is that the waste is not recycled in a proper way and the whole waste management business is lagging behind. There are no interest for waste management there due to the bad politics, local corrupt governmet etc.

It would be great if western waste management entrepreneurs would start establishing their companies in those countries and help locals to work in waste management business. Recycled waste could be processed and reused. Jobs would be created. Communities would get educated. Waste management business should be some how reinvented and innovated. There’s a big need for it, especially in third world countries. And what is alarming (and totally understandable) that all those countries in Asia (for example) want the same level of living as we westerns have. Imagine all that consumption that is only rising. Maybe the government can do something about it? make a program for people who doesn’t have work and make this as their job to clean the island? Seriously, why are we doing this to earth and to these poor animals. Once she starts digging you can’t really approach them. It isn’t safe for them, and it is better to protect the eggs. Also, it generally takes the female one to three hours in good conditions, and they will often stop when approached or if they sense danger (or humans nearby). The pollution made it more difficult, but that gives a little perspective on the Turtle Christmas Light Shirt line.
